last weekend the hubs and myself snuck away to whidbey island for a short adventure outside of the city. after living in seattle for almost 8 years I can’t believe that I had done little more than drive through whidbey island. it is such a gem of community! the sun streaked forest, wide open spaces, and never ending sunsets reminded me of my little home pocket of wisconsin – except on whidbey of course you also have the beaches and mountain views. so amazing.
the food was amazing, the wine was great, and there’s so much to explore and enjoy. you’ll also get a big giant exhalation thanks to the slower pace of island life. and did I mention that it’s just a fifteen minute ferry ride from mukilteo? pretty perfect getaway if you ask me.
we found the whidbey island distillery by chance as we were driving back to our airbnb after a sunny afternoon of laid back golf. when you pull into their quant little property, you’re greeted by their cheery red underground tasting room and some smiling faces who will give you a tour of their handmade operation and let you sample the goods. I took home a bottle of the loganberry & a bottle of the raspberry liqueur, but they also have a blackberry which is award winning. literally. their alcohol is distilled from washington state wines, and then mashed with local fruit. you can taste the purity of their product, and the love of the labor as well!
the first thing we made when we got back to the city were these raspberry lemonade cocktails. so juicy and mouth watering, they make you feel like you’re 8 again with your bare feet in the grass and the summer sun on your face. I didn’t even know that feeling came in a bottle, but I guess it does. quite a treat for the summer months! these drinks would fit right in at your next barbecue next to your grilled goods and good friends.Print
